On Thursday September 22nd the FBI conducted raids and arrests across the US resulting in the arrests of two alleged “Anonymous” and “LulzSec” members. The FBI claims that one of those arrested, Christopher Doyon, 47, from Mountain View, California, is “Commander X” from the People’s Liberation Front(PLF).
He was arrested along with Joshua John Covelli for allgedly participating in “Operation Peace Camp 2010” LOIC/DDOS attacks against Santa Cruz County computer systems, protesting a controversial outdoor sleeping ban. Read the indictment here: (Scribd or DOJ)
Doyon’s lawyer has said that regardless of his defendant’s alleged role in the action, that DDOS activities are nothing more than a legitimate “digital sit-in” and should not be prosecuted as criminal activity.
Cody Kretsinger (“Recursion”) was also arrested in Phoenix AZ for allegedly participating in LulzSec attacks against Sony Pictures computer systems where large amounts of company and customer records were acquired through SQL injection vulnerabilities. Read his indictment: (Scribd)
Search warrants were also executed against unknown people in Minnesota, Montana and New Jersey, but no further information is available at this time.
Those arrested were charged with Title 18 Section 1030 Computer Fraud and Abuse Act violations. Although the majority of Anonymous defendants being prosecuted for CFAA are only accused of low-level LOIC/DDOS actions, Congress and the Obama administration is currently pushing for increased sentences and RICO conspiracy classifications.
We stand in solidarity with hackers and leakers everywhere who take action against oppressive governments and corporations. Freedom to all accused Anonymous defendants!
